Our first attempt at tanning a deer hide

Our friend gave us a bunch of deer meat along with a deer hide. After chopping up the carcus so it would be easier for Judith to handle I moved on to the hide.

Silas’ wanted a hide to hang over his bed so I figured it can’t be that hard, right?

First step remove all fat and meat left on the hide then salt.

Well, I didn’t realize how hard it is to remove fat and leftover meat from a hide plus we realized we didn’t have 5 lbs. of salt on hand.

So the hide ended up in the freezer and we were off to the store to buy salt and then YouTube to figure out our next course of action.

We’ll let you know how it turns out.

Ah, life in the country.
